The singer is also leader of Rufus. Khan was raised as a Catholic. She attended The Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church Elementary School. Her grandmother introduced her to music while she was a young child. Khan began listening to jazz and blues when she was in her teens. Khan has clarified that she was the Yoruba Baba had given her the name of her birth Chaka Adunne Aduffe. She left in 1969 the Panthers and left high school after having been to Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She started performing in small groups around the Chicago region, first with Cash McCall's group Lyfe with her former boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan were married in the year 1971.
